Grand Frere et grande soeur du grand Montreal

History

Trois petits frères

The Big Brothers movement started in the United States. The organization was founded thanks to a group of men worried about the high rate of delinquency among young boys from single-parent families.

In 1903, they undertook to help these kids, on an individual basis, by offering them the presence of an adult volunteer. The goal of this approach was to create a bond of friendship, confidence, and encouragement between child and adult.
In 1908, women also got involved with girls living _ similar situations.

Gradually, given the incredible need of the kids, the movement developed and crossed borders, becoming an international movement.

In 1911, the first Canadian agencies were established. Back then, they were affiliated with the American movement.

It was in 1964 that the Big Brothers of Canada association was founded. It is currently comprised of more than 175 agencies throughout the country, about twenty of which are in Quebec.

Big Brothers of Montreal was born in 1975 and the Big Sisters program was integrated in 1980. That same year also marked the organization's affiliation to Centraide.

Prometheus Project, which was founded in 1989, is a Montreal based program, which provides mentoring services to students at risk of dropping out of school. In 2002 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Montreal merged with Prometheus Project.

Since its inception, the Greater Montreal association has made it possible for more than 6,000 kids needing a significant role model in their life to be paired.
